Amber — Some Embellishments

I saw the movie The Runaways, starring Kirsten Stewart and Dakota Fanning, yesterday.  It. Was. So. Friggin. Good!! Kirsten Stewart is one of the most versatile young actresses in the world!  She completely pulled of an angry, angsty, bisexual Joan Jett without a hitch.  It was very convincing and very intense.  That girl deserves some recognition!  And, I won’t leave out the beautiful Dakota Fanning, who played the role of Cheri Currie with much aplomb, taking huge risky steps away from her tame acting norm with this very provocative role.  Both girls acted with “balls to the wall” and gave it everything they had to give.  Word!

I. Got. My. Taxes. Filed. Today.  Nuff said.  (I have been avoiding this task like the plague, and it turned out to be 98% easier than I expected). 😉

This evening my Favorite Five-Year-Old Boy decided to start his own restaurant…in the bathroom.  He set up a table for two, for My Roommate and I, complete with chairs, napkins, art work on the walls…it was really quite something!  The entree consisted of six pieces of Corn Bran cereal arranged just so and two pieces of kale (which I’m pretty sure he picked up off the floor after I had dropped a few pieces while chopping it up).  The restaurant even has a French name that he came up with completely on his own — Pariveir.  Pictures, if you please:

Okay kiddies,  here it is… the basic building blocks for a successful weight loss program:

1.   Make sure you do your homework and read your ENTIRE Weight Watchers book where it says you are allowed 35 flex points in addition to your daily points value (33 for me).  You may just be GAINING weight and starving to death, instead of losing weight.  and you don’t want that to lead to detention, do you?

2.  Pay attention to your weight loss plan and try to keep it together! ADHD does not mean Attention Defiant Hefty Dinner.  It may mean All Dates Head for the Door, though.

3.   Make sure you don’t go to your sister’s house and eat thick slices of seed encrusted bread with organic chunky peanut butter and some concoction called “palm oil with sugar” that tastes like heaven just arrived in your mouth – namely sweet swirly caramel-y coconut spread.  Please do not comment if you know the name of this… the guilt and shame of the sins I have committed need not tempt the innocent.

4.  Make sure you fit exercise in wherever you can… even if this means coming home at 11:30 at night when your neighbours are not home, getting on the treadmill, and sweating it up until 12:15!!     Heck, you probably got up at 3 in the morning as a baby and cried out your little lusty lungs for hours.   Go on……


5.  Listen to your teachers!  Paint your fingernails and toenails.  What does this have to do with losing weight you ask?  Well, okay nothing.  But if you have this huge lofty goal that you are trying to reach and it seems everything depends on the top blocks, an accidental topple of the entire stack can lead to a full-blown tantrum and a sudden puddle of tears.   Besides, class, the argument could be said that for older girls, taking care of our girly body parts is just like taking care of a diet plan and what does perfection take? Practice, practice, practice! They both take planning, work, are totally fun at times, have great results, and contribute to (mental) health and happiness if continued over the span of a lifetime! Besides, every 2 year old girl loves a bit of sparkle and shine, and nothing says ‘I’m special’ like a garish feather boa and wet nails, so break out the polish!! – oh, and if there’s just NO part of you that has sparkle written over it <insert women’s hockey league here>. You Go Girl!!


  • Instant Cream of Wheat.  Much better than the homemade cereal my mother created and called “lump-a-bumps”.  Nuff said.  3 pts.
  • Coffee.   Sweet elixer of pheremone delight. 2 pts.
  • 1 cup of blueberries.  Hey, its a primary color right? 1 pt.


  • Jared and I are best friends… hahaha… just kidding!!  We shared a Subway sub together, but somehow I ended up eating the whole footlong. 😉 hahaha.. and ewwww. 13 points!
  • Granola bar… looked at recipe of “healthy rice crispy bar” and thought, nah… these are fine.  Childish delusions.  2 pts.


  • oh yeah… nothing.  oh wait!!!!!! Animal crackers.  Really.  6 pts.


  • 1 cup M&M chili.  5 points.
  • One huge Yukon Gold baked potato with buttah dahling.  5 pts.
  • Cheese during a weak moment.  4 pts.
  • A WW chocolate cake 4 pts.

So my grand total is 33!! Let me get my calculator and double check those numbers, class.   Ummm yeah……43 pts.  This definitely means detention.

Emotional state:

  • Feeling like I could have done my new exercise video if I hadn’t been so wittily challenged for this blog.  Wah-waaaah.
  • Tired.
  • Feeling sad because my babysitter (who is a wonderful person!) has to have surgery and is not feeling very well at all.   Although, the prayer wagon’s got her hitched up now, so I am at peace with that.  Also, other close friends on my mind (and wagons hitched!).
  • Realizing I spend a LOT of time in grocery stores…No, its not to feed my habit.  That’s one vow I’ve never taken.. haha 😉 .   I don’t like it.  I’m feel like the equivalent of a food alcoholic.
  • I walked into Penningtons on the weekend and looked at the mannequins and said to myself  “no.  I don’t want to BE here”… and much later went home to eat.  Lost in translation.
  • I was reading my financial class manual about how I can start changing how I look at the world and realized I could do that to my home life.  I can change the way I feel about time management at home, eating late at night, food triggers, eating challenges, and even shopping.  My world doesn’t have to be shaped like it is now… I am open to change and to moving around the blocks.

Water Count:

  • Dear children, do as I say, not as I do.   I should be a camel.  Best effort tomorrow!

Exercise for today:

  • Aaaack.  None.

Weight 263.6!  5 lb down, but I think this is a mistake.. in the p.m. I weighed in at 266.8.  Hmmm….

Good things about today:  Having good friends to love and be around and miss and pray for.   Letting God take over the poetry.  The sound of a bittersweet tango mimicking the fell and swoop of my heart.  The fact that I listed all the stuff I ate today.  I don’t want to hide… because the scale knows and I know and soon I’ll want to do better every day.  Finally, the childish simplicity that tomorrow is another day.. another moment to laugh, another chance to dream silly daydreams, another day where we play we are the superheros of our lives and justice always wins.  We all have worth, we all have value.

Amber — March 17-22 — Birth, Birthdays, Bellboys, Beets!!

Well, it’s been five days since my last post so here is the GARGANTUAN update post.  I fully intended on posting e v e r y  s i n g l e  d a y  last week, but life intervened…literally!  Last Wednesday afternoon I received a text message from a good friend of mine letting me know that she had gone into early labour (36 weeks gestation!).  My Roommate and I drove out to the Fraser Valley late that night to be her doulas and assist in one of the most remarkable and beautiful home births I have ever been a part of.  It was a gift!  There is nothing that binds women together more intensely than helping one another through the birthing process.  We were MEANT to support each other in this way, and I am so grateful to be a doula and have this experience with so many of my closest friends.  A picture of babe, mom, and dad at the moment right after baby was delivered and put on mom’s chest:

I took a hiatus from blogging to catch up on sleep the following day (Thursday).  Friday morning I headed to curves *pats self on back*, then spent the afternoon helping my roommate prepare for her daughter’s 1st birthday.  She decided to make an owl cake and some owl cupcakes for the big event, and it was so much fun to put together. Here are some pictures of the final results!  AMAZING!! And the party, held at Little Nest, was just sah-well.

Saturday morning I was boating off to Victoria with a Good Friend for the weekend.  We were going to attend her sister’s art collective’s art show/open house for the community (wow…complicated sentence).  It was such a relaxing and inspiring trip.  Things I did:

– Peed in the Fairmont Hotel bathroom (which had gorgeous wallpaper, FYI!).

– Took hundreds of abstract photos.

– Slept in a large cloud-like queen-sized bed.

–  Soaked in a jetted hot tub

–  Rented New Moon from the hotel movie catalog for a whopping $13 in desperation.

– Walked down Fan Tan Alley, the narrowest alleyway in Canada!

– Ate dim sum in Victoria’s Chinatown (after which I was nearly unable to walk BACK down Fan Tan Alley)

–  met a ruggedly handsome bell boy.

– Enjoyed the simple beauty of delicate and fragrant spring blossoms.

–  Had a near panic attack in the backseat of a van after being assaulted by two GIANT (okay…so they were the size of my pinky, whatever!) spiders causing me to cry in front of strangers

— Had me some time on the open ocean.  ARRRR!

And now, it’s Monday and I’m back in the city and back in the kitchen!  That’s right…tonight I cooked for My Roommate and My Favorite Five-Year-Old Boy.   I was inspired by a dormant packet of goat cheese crying out to be used, which I noticed in the fridge for the umpteenth time this morning.  I LOVE goat cheese and beet salad, so I thought I would give it a try.

One of the most exciting elements of preparing a meal is the shopping that happens first!  I love shopping for produce, picking that perfect beet, that robust and leafy head of spinach, that pleasingly ripe avocado — it’s very therapeutic and a place I am allowed to have discriminating tastes!  I bought everything I needed, shoved it in my backpack, and headed for home…and then I remembered Dutch Girl Chocolates on The Drive.  I just HAD to make one more stop there — not for me, but for my My Roommate!  Yes, yes, my faithful ole’ roommate.  I wanted to get her a special somethin’ because she did a VERY brave thing today.  I won’t say what, cause it’s my job to blog about MY life not other people’s, but I will just say that it was something that she practiced long and hard for and will hopefully give her a HUGE career boost!  (Update!!!:  She auditioned for a full length feature…and she booked the lead supporting role!!!!!!!)  I found a dark chocolate heart-shaped lollipop that said “you’re awesome”.  I repeated the words out loud to myself when I went up to the till to pay, to which the attendant replied “Thank you…oh wait…you’re talking about the chocolate heart, aren’t you?”  It was funny…to me.

Anyhow…moving forward…I arrived home around 5 pm, unloaded the groceries, cleaned up the kitchen, vacuumed and swept the house, then started the process of peeling and cutting the beets, lightly coating them in olive oil with a dash of salt and pepper before sticking them in the oven at 350.  I then blanched the kale until it was softer and more easily edible, after which I set it marinating in a vinaigrette dressing (virgin olive oil, balsamic vinegar, and strawberry jam). I decided to make Amber’s Famous Quick  Biscuits to go along with the salad.  These were really fun.  I got creative by adding a bit of curry powder and cottage cheese for extra flavour and yumminess.  After the biscuits and beets were cooked, I mixed fresh spinach with the kale mixture and toasted up some walnuts in the frying pan.  I then plated the greens, added a layer of fresh avocado, followed by the toasted walnuts, the roasted beets, and a spoonful of goat cheese.  I completed the whole shabang with a biscuit on  each plate and we were good to go!  It was a huge success…although My Favorite Five-Year-Old Boy thought it was “swampy”.  Not sure what that means exactly, but I assume he was thinking of inviting Shrek and Fiona over to finish his plate for him inconspicuously.  Yep.  Okay, enough blabbing…here is a picture!!!!  😉

MOOD:  Refreshed, contemplative, inspired, motivated.


Breakfast:  Bowl of Optimum Slim organic cereal with skim milk, and…a few pieces of totsi roll *blush*.

Lunch:  Steamed bok choy, agadeshi tofu…a few more pieces of totsi roll (why, Amber, WHY?!) *extreme blush*.

Dinner:  *Redemption!!!* Homemade roasted beet and goat cheese salad with homemade curry/cottage cheese biscuits. ..and a glass of diluted orange juice.  😉
